COP says halt in UDeCOTT probe a deliberate plot

The Congress of the People (COP) on Sunday issued a media release calling the indefinite postponement of the UFF Commission of Inquiry "a deliberate and calculated plot" to prematurely abort the probe.

The statement by political leader Winston Dookeran said the move is "tantamount to fraud committed against the people of Trinidad & Tobago by the President, Prime Minister and the Attorney General."

The chairman of the enquiry will announce Monday that due to the failure to "gazette" the proceedings he is forced to suspend the probe until further notice. Such a move puts the entire process in jeopardy.

Dookeran says the failure to gazette is too basic and fundamental an error for it not to have been deliberate.

"Our citizens deserve far better from those given the authority to act on our behalf. The present circumstances scandalize our Republic. Those responsible must go!" Dookeran said.

He added, "It is a shame and an insult to the intelligence of our people to allow this charade to continue. Corruption in high office must come to an end, sooner rather than later.

"We cannot use Commissions of Enquiry and the manipulation of such Commissions to be a buffer to protect white collar criminals."

Dookeran called on the Commissioner of Police and the Director of Public Prosecution to take responsibility and launch an immediate criminal investigation based on evidence already made available to the Commission of Inquiry.
