A 38-year-old Trini is facing up to four years in jail in the United States for defrauding five members of the Trinidad community in South Ozone Park and Richmond Hill sections of Queens of nearly US$100,000.
Nazim 'Tony' Hosein pleaded guilty to defrauding his fellow Trinis by promising to expedite and produce legitimate green cards and other U.S. documents.
He admitted that he took the money from them and signed a confession of judgment in the amount of US$91,800 to be paid back to his five victims.
Police arrested Hosein in January when he arrived at New York's JFK airport on a flight from Trinidad.
His sentencing is set for August 19 and he could get the maximum sentence, which is four years in prison.
Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said Hosein's victims worked hard and saved their money to live the American. "Instead, they were defrauded by this defendant who must be punished for taking advantage of these vulnerable victims," Brown said.
