T&T police warn east coast tourists to be on guard against crime

Police are warning local and foreign tourists to take extra precautions when staying in beach and guest houses along Trinidad's east coast. Their advice is to stay away from the beaches at night.

Mayaro police say they are increasing surveillance with some detectives in civilian clothing and unmarked vehicles patrolling the seafront streets, giving advice and warnings to visitors.

Police are also making an extra effort to warn people to keep personal belongings, such as jewelry, computers and cameras concealed.

Criminals have been robbing tourists on the east coast beaches between Manzanilla and Mayaro and so far this year there have been several unsolved murders in the areas.

Member of Parliament for the Mayaro, Winston Peters, wants to see a heavier police presence.

"We need more patrols on the beach that is if we are serious about tourism. Robberies have been going on for a while now-about two years - and that is the advice the police has given, but I don't think they have arrested anyone for the crimes that have been committed," the MP told the Trinidad Express.
