National Security Minister Martin Joseph acknowledged in the Senate Tuesday that the Trinidad and Tobago police service is short by at least 1,000 officers.
He confirmed an opposition Senator Wade Mark's claim that "there are some 6,357 officers but the required strength is some 7,691 officers, giving us a deficit of close to 1,334 officers."
The minister said, "Senator Mark said that there is a shortage of 1,000 police officers and he's correct and this is why the Government has made a commitment of recruiting 500 police officers per year. This year we were able to recruit 200 and seventy-something."
He suggested that it is not an easy task to recruit new police officers since many who show interest do not meet the basic requirement.
