Karen Nunez-Tesheira sues for $20m in husband's death

Finance Minister Karen Nunez-Tesheira is seeking more than $20 million in compensation in a lawsuit against Gulf View Medical Centre, urologist Dr Lester Goetz and anesthesiologist Dr Crisen Jendra Roopchand.

It's in connection with her husband's death. She is the executor of the estate of the late Russell Tesheira, who died
on April 13, 2004, shortly after undergoing surgery. He was 53.

The cause of death was listed as cardiac failure and shock and haemorrhaging.
Nunez-Tesheira is alleging that the health professionals and the nursing home put her husband at risk by performing a transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) procedure on him.

She claims that the doctors should have known that the procedure would result in heavy bleeding, putting the patient at risk. Her husband also had a heart condition but a cardiologist has certified that he was fit to undergo the medical procedure.

The defendants have filed legal responses to Nunez-Tesheira's claims, noting that there was no reasonable cause of action against them.

The minister claims that her husband's untimely death deprived him of annual earnings of over $3.8 million a year and she is seeking compensation for each year since his death, estimated at more than $20 million for the past five years.

She also claims that since his death she no longer enjoys benefits that her husband's employment as a senior CLICO executive provided.

These, according to her statement of claim, include first-class travel, staying only at first-class hotels or five star hotels and trips abroad, dining out and attending functions and charity events as spouse of the deceased and a Christmas hamper every year worth approximately $5,000.

On Monday a court adjourned the matter to January 19, 2010, to give Nunez-Tesheira’s attorneys time to get an expert medical witness to testify in the case.
