Indo group calls on Manning to probe discrimination allegations

The president of the Indo-Trinbago Equality Council (ITEC) has written to Prime Minister Patrick Manning asking him to "investigate the serious allegations of racial discrimination against Indian workers in the public sector".

Devant Maharaj's letter calls on Manning to establish a Commission of Enquiry to probe allegations made last week by Opposition MP Dr Tim Gopeesingh that the Manning administration has been using a policy of political discrimination targeting Indo-Trinidadians in Trinidad and Tobago.

"The Indo-Trinbago Equality Council (ITEC) calls upon the Honourable Prime Minister to launch a Commission of Enquiry to investigate the serious allegations of racial discrimination against Indian workers in the public sector.

"Dr. Tim Gopeesingh's revelation about the plight of senior Indian doctors who are being frustrated and squeezed out of the local health care system merits serious consideration, in light of the increase in medical negligence cases involving foreign doctors at our hospitals," Maharaj wrote.

He also wrote about other similar allegations, "such as secret scholarships to St Georges Medical School, Grenada, and the altering of the admissions criteria at Mount Hope Medical School, have created a strong perception within the Indian community that the State has a social engineering agenda which discriminates actively against the Indian community."

Maharaj condemned Manning's response to Gopeesingh's claims on Friday, when he said the Parliament is not the place for "that kind of talk".

Maharaj is himself a victim of Manning's discrimination. His promotion in a statutory board was blocked by the prime minister. He took the matter to court and won.
