Trinidad and Tobago's Salaries Review Commission (SRC) has recommended that government hold its hand on increasing the salaries and pensions for top officials including the president, prime minister, cabinet ministers and other members of Parliament.
The SRC's latest report suggests that this is there is need for caution in view of the current economic downturn in the country.
In a statement to Parliament Information Minister Neil Parsanlal, said Cabinet has accepted the recommendation. He added that the SRC indicated some exceptions to its recommendations with respect to the salaries of certain offices in the Judicial and Legal Service.
Current monthly salaries in TT dollars:
President$ - 49,500
Prime Minisiter - $48,000
Cabinet Minister - $33,000
Other Minister of Government -$27,300
Leader of the Opposition - $23,800
Opposition MPs - $14,000
Independent and Opposition Senators -$10,500
The SRC has recommended a salary of $31,250 per month for the police commissioner, which is more that the salary of the country's highest-ranking military officer. The Chief of Defence Staff currently earns TT$25,000 a month.
