Four more homicides Sunday have taken the Trinidad and Tobago murder toll to 254 for the year. Police figures show that eight people were killed over the weekend. At this rate the final figure for 2009 could exceed last year's figure of 550, the highest ever for the country, which has a population of just over one million.
The killings, which are up by 38 per cent, have led to the country being dubbed the murder capital of the Caribbean, with an average of 55 murders per 100,000, the highest in the region.
By comparison, the murder rate in both Canada and the UK is about two per 100,000.
