Junior Health Minister Ann Peters told the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC). “We have result from the Caribbean Epidemiology Centre (CAREC) in Trinidad and I am happy to report that the two persons are negative for the virus.”
However she said health authorities will continue to monitor them. They have identified the two persons as a female Grenadian student and her Surinamese boyfriend. Officials say there are no plans to bring home others who are studying in Mexico.
Peters said that all measures would be maintained to ensure the safety of nationals and visitors to the island. “We cannot afford to be discriminatory, if it comes it will affect all especially the vulnerable, therefore we will be enforce our infectious disease outbreak protocol to ensure the safety of this nation,” said Peters.
She said passengers arriving from international cities where suspected or confirmed cases have been recorded would face full screening and anyone who refuses to comply "will be made to face the full force of the law.”
Grenada’s infectious disease legislation gives the Chief Medical Officer the powers to confine persons who are suffering from an infectious disease and who refuse to comply with health officials with regard to a treatment or prevention protocol.
The screening includes completing a health history questionnaire as well as observation by a medical team that is stationed at major ports of entry. The island’s only general hospital has created a special flu-like symptoms area for all persons visiting the Emergency Unit.
