Panday refused to support the amendments that the Government has before Parliament to bail out the financially-strapped CL Financial. His effort was futile because of the government majority; the bills passed with support from the 26 members of the governing People's National Movement (PNM).
At the start of Friday's debate Panday told the House, “Government must give an undertaking that HCU depositors will be treated in the same way as CLICO depositors and we must defer these amendments until such time.”
He made it clear that he would not give "any support whatever on these bills until they treat the citizens of this country equally and I want that before I give any support to these amendments.”
Minister Patrick Manning made jest of Panday suggesting the former prime minister was just playing to the gallery.
