Trinidad and Tobago remains one of the most violent places on the planet as the new year begins. Police figures show that 544 people were murdered during the year, with at least 77 still listed as missing. Of the total murders, police say 365 were gang-related - one for every day of the year.
By comparison the city of Toronto, Canada, with a population two and a half times that of Trinidad and Tobago recorded 70 murders for 2008. For all of Canada (population: 33 million) there were 594 murders in 2007. The 2008 figure is not yet available.
