A letter from a friend

My Friends,

I never thought I would live to see this day. Last night, at approximately two minutes to midnight (Trinidad time) when CNN projected that Barack Obama would be the next President of the United States, I could not stop the flow of tears that fell from my eyes.

A mere 40 years after his assassination, Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream has finally come true. Barack Obama now carries on his shoulders the hopes and aspirations of millions around the world.
I am convinced that the very fact that he has won will immediately change America’s international image for the better. Let us wish him all success in the difficult months and years ahead.

I believe that he is capable of making that fundamental change which the United States needs from being a war-mongering international bully to being a country that leads the rest of the world through mutual respect for all.

Last night I also gained considerable respect for John Mc Cain for the extremely gracious manner in which he accepted defeat. He showed the world that he is a man of class. If only politicians in Trinidad and Tobago could take note.

The journey has only just begun. The battle must now continue to be fought on all fronts so that the struggles of men like Martin Luther King and Trinidad’s own Stokely Carmichael would not be in vain.

We have been fortunate in our lifetimes to witness the contributions of world-changing leaders like Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi.

Barack Obama now has his chance to join their ranks and to improve the lives of all persons regardless of their race or religion. Let us all resolve to do what we can to help him to achieve his noble objectives. God bless Barack Obama.
