Former Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Basdeo Panday has written a letter of congratulations to U.S. president-elect Barack Obama. The leader of the United National Congress has told Obama his victory has given hope to millions worldwide who are now inspired with renewed belief that no goal is impossible.
Panday's letter states:
"As the first East Indian Prime Minister of my country, I empathize with you because I know that there will be tremendous demands upon you to right historical wrongs and restore justice sometimes more swiftly than is humanly possible.
"My humble advice to you is to see the humanity in all beings and treat all people as equal...Your success marks a great moment in modern history and is especially close to the hearts of people of African origin in America and elsewhere.
"It is a major milestone in the re-emergence of people of colour from the indignity and oppression of the slave era."
Noting that Obama is taking office when the world is facing its worst economic crisis in decades Panday said with Obama in the White House there is optimism that these troubles will be defeated.
"Having followed your campaign closely, I too believe that you are possessed of the mental spirit that will find the answers," Panday wrote.
