PM says new SSA head coming soon; pledges to root out crime

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar told reporters Tuesday night her Cabinet has selected a suitable candidate to head the Strategic Services Agency (SSA) and will make the appointment very soon.

She gave an update during a tour of several Carnival mas camps in Woodbrook. And she said the cabinet is working on a merger of the intelligence agencies. "There is a report before the Cabinet which we will deal with shortly," she said.

With respect to the SSA head, she said: "We will have a new SSA director on board."

She added, "I think you all will be very pleased with the proposed candidate, which we will let you know as soon as we can. We still have to deliberate further on it at the Cabinet because, as I said, we have to have a more rigorous process and that is what we are doing at this time."

The PM also commented on the shooting death of pannists Henry Cyrus and Wendell Joseph. Cyrus was killed at the Uni-Stars panyard in Laventille last Friday. Joseph was killed on January 30.

"It's a terrible," Persad-Bissessar said. "We continue to work as hard as we can to make people feel safe and to have people feel safe.'

She said her government is working to deal with the problem and gave an assurance that things will get better.

"You know people say we are dismantling all the security agencies, no. All those things were there and what happened, the crime was going up, it wasn't coming down. So therefore there must be, some re-arrangements have to take place," Persad-Bissessar said.

"People voted for change and that change will come that will be able to help us to be able to deal with crime. I agree with you that crime is a cause for concern. It's impacting on the panyards, it's impacting on the Carnival, but we are doing all that we can to bring the crime down."
