School principal on sex charges involving kids gets bail

A 52-year-old primary school principal who appeared in court to answer 14 charges of serious indecency and indecent sexual assault has been granted bail.
 

David Smith, principal of Harmon SDA Primary School in Tobago, stood before Magistrate Glen Mahabir at the Scarborough Magistrates' Court on Monday.

The charges were laid indictably and he was not called upon to plead.

He was granted bail in the sum of $400,000 on the condition that he stays away from the victims and their immediate relatives. Smith was also ordered not to communicate with the victims either by phone, internet or through a third party.

He is expected to reappear in court on March 10th. The Principal was arrested last Friday after allegedly committing offences of a sexual nature against a 12 year old girl and other minors.

Initial reports indicated that he was accused of some 75 sexual offences. However, he was charged with 14 counts of sexual assault.
